Tatiarra produces four styles of Shiraz and any wine that is not suitable for inclusion into the main blends is labelled as ‘Culled Barrel Shiraz’. An accountant would argue that growing a single grape variety is not exactly a prudent business practice, for if the demand for the variety wanes, Tatiarra has no other wine to offer. This may well be the argued case in larger, more diverse wine producing companies, however Tatiarra is a specialist niche producer. The company’s obsession is not to be the biggest, but rather one of the best Shiraz producers in the world.

The Shiraz wines at Tatiarra are made to be cellared with excellent balance between fruit and tannin levels, which, whilst firmish, are perfectly balanced. These wines are capable of being cellared for 15-20 years, at temperatures of 15 degrees and 75% humidity. Tatiarra uses very long very expensive high-grade corks to ensure that the full potential of the wine can be realised.

Totally opaque black purple colour, a total saturation, with a deep black purple cling to the walls of the glass. Magnificent nose – delivering a superb sniffing experience, immediately recognisable as great Heathcote Shiraz. Perfumed violet top note, with flavours of blackberry, liquorice, spice, cedar and very pronounced black pepper. The palate is an explosion – it would seem impossible to deliver more concentration of flavour. Intense layers of blackberry, cedar, black pepper, liquorice and black cherries, with the kind of power and persistence that are occasionally found in the very great bottles of Pinot Noir. The tannins are persistent, but they are fine and perfectly balanced. Exceptionally long aftertaste which lasts for minutes.

Wine Advocate – 95 Points
The 2005 Shiraz Cambrian reveals more chocolate and scorched earth characteristics than the 2004 as well as fuller body, more abundant fruit, and huge tannin, muscle, and extract. Only connoisseurs with great cellars as well as abundant patience should consider purchasing this monster. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025+.
