Founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, Kilikanoon is a boutique Clare Valley winery with an international reputation for producing regionally expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Kilikanoon property, featuring a circa 1860s stone cottage housing Kilikanoon tasting room, was originally settled by early English migrants who named it after an historic old mansion in Cornwall. On purchase of the historic property in 1997, mature vineyards of shiraz, cabernet, grenache and riesling that had been planted by Kevin’s father, Mort in the 1960’s, became a part of Kilikanoon, and now form the heart of the estate vineyards. 10 years on, with the addition of partners Nathan Waks, a principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony, and Bruce Baudinet, Managing Director of Oracle Estates, Kilikanoon is rated by US and Australian critics as one of the Clare Valley’s outstanding wineries, producing bracingly intense and long-lived rieslings, along with powerful, yet balanced shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon.

The 2004 Parable is made entirely from the grapes of two premium vineyards in the Mclaren Vale region. Both vineyards are low yielding, traditionally managed and are between 30 and 45 years of age.

Traditional vinification techniques using small separate batches of fruit, open fomenters and basket pressing has created a full bodied and flavoursome Shiraz. The wine was matured for 2 years in small American and French oak casks before careful blending and bottling unfiltered to ensure the preservation of the intense varietal characters. Limited production.

Intense, purple red in colour with distinctive, youthful crimson hues. Powerful and lifted aromas of coffee and mocha chocolate, plums and berry fruits with toasty oak complexity.
Again, flavours of plum fruit, chocolate and coffee dominate the palate. The firm tannins and generous mouthfeel of the wine find their way through to an integrated, lingering flavour persistence.

Wine Advocate – 96 Points
While its’s splitting hairs, I thought the 2004 Shiraz Parable was slightly better than the Testament. Made from two vineyards, 35 and 45 years old, it was given an upbringing similar to that of the Testament cuvee, but seems to posses slightly more aromatic nuances, and just as much body, concentration, and intensity. It also may reveal more floral, blue, and black fruits in the mouth. This stunningly profound Shiraz should age effortlessly for 15 – 20 years.
